Remember the General Assembly Vote

141 nations voted in favour of the UN General Assembly motion condemning the invasion of Ukraine. Beyond the two nations – Russia and Belarus – responsible for the invasion of Ukraine, only three countries voted against the resolution approved by the UN General Assembly: North Korea, Eritrea, and Syria.

While this was a strong endorsement of the resolution, 35 countries abstained. Sadly, based on a range of rationales, each in their own way failed to oppose the unprovoked invasion of a sovereign nation. As an aid to our collective memory, these nations were: Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burundi, Central African Republic, China, Congo, Cuba, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, India, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar, Mali, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.

As the Russian-Belarusian invasion of Ukraine continues, I can only hope these nations will see the consequences of this war on Ukraine and reconsider the wisdom of a position that I and many others view as inexplicable.  Remember, for as the Ukrainian Ambassador said, this was a ‘defining moment’.
